I am the Special one

Interesting that Tottenham won on Saturday, considering they haven’t won an away game in the Premiership since January 2019.  They have had a shocker of a season, 14th in the premier league which lead to the sacking of poor Pochettino who took them so far last season. Hey presto Mourinho arrives and they win! Confidence? Luck? Or knowing that they have one of the greatest Managers of our time in charge?

Mourinho has a great pedigree and has managed some of the best teams in the World, including Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United and now Spurs. He was a professional but mediocre player in Portugal and actually entered the realms of the big leagues as Bobby Robson’s assistant and interpreter at Sporting CP and Porto. He returned as the Porto Manager in 2002, the rest is history.

I like him, he’s got a whole load of charisma and confidence and one hell of an ego. (I like Pep more, he’s better looking and is super stylish.) But Mourinho is the special one and possesses a number of the traits needed to be a good Manager:

Leads by example – You have to have walked the walk and do as you say.

Understands people – As a Manager, its so important to get to know your people. Regular one to ones, team meeting, social events are so important. You need to know what makes your team ticks.

Gets results – A good Manager will always be able to get the best out of his team. Give them the tools they need to do their job and to be the best that they can be.

Has Integrity – Be honest and open always, have morals and stick with them. Mean what you say.

Humility – Action without reward. Be in it for the right reasons.  The quality of being honest.

Not afraid to make hard decisions – In Management, this is a fact of life. A good leader will communicate this well and deliver this mindful of others.

Innovative mindset – Roll with the changes. Have an open mind and welcome new ideas.

Knows his business well – A master of ones trade. Research, visit trade shows. Keep an eye on what is out there. You have to be on top of your game always.

Collaborative – You have to get on with the people you work with. Communicate well and make sure your team are on board with the decisions you make.

Sense of humour – This makes the working environment so much better, the days shorter and the time at work so much more enjoyable. Lets be honest, we all love a belly laugh, its good for the soul.

Resilience – Ride the rough spots

Being an Arsenal fan, Tottenham are not my favourite of course, but I am really interested to see how Mourinho gets on. He is very eccentric, says some outrageous stuff and I like that he is bonkers, he will also go down in history as being one of footballs greatest Managers.

Personally, I feel really blessed to have worked with some really good Managers, present company included. Thank you Will Grasshoff for being a great Boss and a really decent bloke.

Namaste
